Scripture Reading for Today - Psalm 23:1-6 (NIV)

Devotional Focus:

Psalm 23:4 (NIV), “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Psalm 23 is one of the most familiar psalms. It is a psalm that is recited frequently and in many cases, it is the first full passage in the Bible we committed to memory. This particular psalm read in its entirety describes the Shepherd who ensures you have no lack, and provides rest and restoration to your soul.

Once God’s comforting presence is established in the passage our first assumption would be that life is great and there will be no more worries. However, that is not exactly what happens, and it is very similar to what we encounter in our everyday lives. Although we know that God is our Shepherd, our provider and restorer, there are still times when darkness enters our lives. Yet, the words of the psalm continue to bring us peace in the time of darkness by letting us know that even when we encounter some of the most trying times in our lives, we don’t have to be consumed with fear because God is with us. The rod and staff of God is a symbol of the Shepherd’s guidance. With the use of the rod and staff, we are kept in close proximity to ensure we can be easily protected and comforted when trouble arises.

When you allow God to guide and lead you through the darkest times in your life, you can be assured that you have nothing to fear because the Lord, your Shepherd, is always near.

Closing prayer: Dear God, I am grateful that in times of chaos, confusion and calamity, you are present to calm all of my fears. I trust you to guide me, with your light, through these dark times. Thank you for leading me to a place of comfort and peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today’s Reflection: In what areas of my life do I need God to bring comfort?
